HSU Nursing Program Funding Reaches $8 Million in Gifts and Grants

Hardin-Simmons University (HSU) is excited to announce that its new on-campus nursing program has reached $8 million in funding, which includes a recent $1 million grant from the U.S. Economic Development Administration (EDA) along with generous contributions from foundations, alumni, friends, and donors, including $100,000 in nursing scholarships from a long-time HSU legacy family.

The funding will enable the construction of state-of-the-art facilities, expand educational resources, and provide enhanced student training opportunities. The nursing program’s new facility, located on the third floor of Abilene Hall, will feature modern classrooms, simulation labs, and cutting-edge equipment designed to prepare students for success in an evolving healthcare landscape.

“We are truly blessed to have the opportunity to shape the future of healthcare by educating the next generation of Christian nurse leaders,” said Dr. Sandra Welling, Founding Director of the HSU Nursing Program. “Together with the nursing faculty, our mission is to develop leaders who will make a meaningful impact on the nursing profession and address the ongoing nursing shortage.”

HSU anticipates a surge in enrollment for the nursing program, which will help address the shortage of qualified nurses in Texas and beyond. The state-of-the-art equipment and simulators, funded by recent donations and grants, will be instrumental in providing hands-on learning experiences for students.

“These advanced tools will help ensure our students are fully prepared for their nursing careers, equipped with the skills and knowledge to lead with excellence and compassion,” added Dr. Welling. “We are excited about the positive change these resources will bring to both our students and the communities they will serve.”

Support from donors has been a cornerstone of bringing the program to fruition. “These gifts reflect the deep commitment of our donors to HSU’s mission of educating the next generation of healthcare leaders,” said Dr. Vicki House, Associate Vice President for Advancement. “We are immensely grateful for the support that will help us make a meaningful impact on healthcare education.”

Dr. Janelle O’Connell, Dean of the College of Health Professions, expressed her gratitude for the overwhelming support. “Since day one of planning for the Hardin-Simmons School of Nursing, it was clear God had His hand on the program. The generosity of many donors has confirmed that HSU is moving in the right direction and that the program will attract many talented and dedicated health professionals.”

With this transformative funding, HSU’s nursing program is set to make a lasting impact on healthcare education and address the increasing demand for healthcare professionals across the region.
